Department of Mathematics, University of Auckland 2005-10-27 I.G.02 William Rowan Hamilton's work made him Ireland's most celebrated mathematician and scientist, and he left an unparalleled legacy of much interest for mathematicians, physicists and engineers. His sister Sydney Margaret Hamilton was his astronomical assistant for several years, and in 1875 she emigrated to Auckland. Consequently, large numbers of important letters and other documents are now in the archives of the Auckland Central Library. |
