The Department of Mathematics at the University of Waikato has one full Professor, three Associate Professors, two Senior Lecturers, three Lecturers, and one Senior Tutor (part-time). It also has a postdoctoral fellow and one Honorary Fellow.

In 2002 the Department taught approximately 170 full-time equivalent undergraduate level students from all Schools of Study (Schools of Study at Waikato are the equivalent of Faculties in other universities) and it had about another 12 full-time equivalent students at graduate and postgraduate level. It offers papers at all levels from first-year undergraduate to second-year graduate, as well as supervision for Masters and Doctoral degrees.

The Department offers a broad programme in pure, applied, and computational mathematics which gives opportunity for specialist and research preparation, but also serves the needs in mathematics of other disciplines in the University. These include, but are not limited to, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, Physics, Materials and Process Engineering, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Management, Education, Economics, and Finance.

Together with the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Statistics, the Department of Mathematics forms the School of Computing & Mathematical Sciences. At the undergraduate level, the School offers a four-year honours degree, the Bachelor of Computing & Mathematical Sciences (BCMS), a three-year Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree. It also offers the Engineering Science programme in the Bachelor of Engineering degree. The Bachelor of Science with Honours (BSc (Hons)) degree is a one-year graduate qualification available to students who have completed a BSc degree at the University of Waikato or a qualification considered equivalent by the Academic Board, and who have reached a required standard in their major subject. The School has two Masters degrees: a one-year Master of Computing & Mathematical Sciences (MCMS), and a two-year Master of Science (MSc). Mathematics students can also take those subjects as majors in degrees administered by other schools. All Schools offer two research-only degrees: the MPhil (one year) and the PhD (three years). A undergraduate as well as a postgraduate diploma are also available. Further information about the degrees and diplomas offered in the School are available in the School Handbook or jump to the SCMS degrees page.

There is growing collaboration between the Departments in the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, to complement the existing collaboration between the Department of Mathematics and the School of Science & Technology, which includes the Departments of Physics and Electronic Engineering, Materials and Process Engineering, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, and Biological Sciences.

The academic staff in the Department of Mathematics carry out research, and publish extensively, in many areas of Mathematics including the following:

Several of the academic staff are past and/or current holders of grants from the Marsden Fund, a research fund established to support excellent research.
